LOOKING FOR ONE FISH AND GOT TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF A PENN SENATOR 14/0
Been looking TO SLAY THE DRAGON and when I finally found him he almost slayed me.
Took a 14/0 i bought a while back as a third reel to my lineup .I usually fish two rods but I figured one more to the arsenal might swing the tide in my favor.Put this 14/0 with 6 1/2 foot Magnuflex rod out with a fresh tail piece of Cuda about 300 yards out.I was sleeping around 12:15 at night Travis and Mannasotta Coty and his family had left the beach 3o minutes earlier and so it was my team mate Keith and I left to fend for ourselves.The Red Bull I drank a few hours earlier had worn off and was in a deep sleep from exhaustion and complete physical overload.Keith starts screaming "Will,Will wake up your 14/0 I scramble top my feet half gone and bewildered Keith hands me the rod and right there in front of me was the dragon daring me to slay it-I KNEW IT IT WAS WHAT WE WERE HERE FOR,IT WAS TIME , I RECOGNIZED THE SPEED AND POWER OF THE BEAST THAT was tearing line off the 14 with abandon.On the ground I leaned back and slammed the reel in gear sitting down and was almost catapulted into the water.
My head was in a swirl still I was half dazed ,bewildered with adrenaline and shocked once again to be doing battle with my favorite opponent ,There was no time for much as the line was leaving the reel I screamed so many orders to Keith that he was a confused mess not knowing which to do first."Keith call Travis tell him to hurry back we;ve hooked the monster,,,,hurry Keith my phone is in my chair's mesh pocket.He gets the phone but cannot see the numbers so as i'm holding on for dear life to the rod with my left arm with my right I look up Travis.s number and he dials.Everything is black and white and happening way too fast Keith look at this MONSTER IT'S WHAT WE CAME FOR "Keith looks at me and the reel in disbelief he's never seen anything like like this on a shartk reel and just then the reel starts making a ratchety sound that I have heard on occasiion and do not like at all.The gears on the reel are slipping from overexertion heat and speed of revolutions.clack ,clack,clack ,clack,clack ,clack,clack the reel is gone beserk and I can't freakin believe it what the hell am i gonna do now??
The reel has lost the dog gear and has gone into free spool I stick my right hand into the spool to try and slow it down but the backlash is coming up like a NUCLEAR MUSHROOM and I manage to get my hand out just in time as the backlash becomes a living nightmare right in front of my eyes -----many things go thru my mind "I hooked the MONSTER and it's just me and my newbie partner,my reel is toast ,how are we gonna do this??"
I start trying to get the reel to reengage and it does but so what I have a birds nest as I scramble to take line off the reel to take out the backlash I'm screaming at Keith cut the line on the other 14/0 and prepare to tie in just then the hammers speed is too fast and the backlash come tight and I scream at Keith to sit behind me and help me hold on so I don't get yanked in just then the line the reel is locked up and i'm not letting go ""GOD help us now""
The reel stops spinning ,the rod begins to arc into a big U and Keith has me by the shoulders as I lean back with every bit of power I can muster we both dig our heels deep into the sand..
I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT JUST HAPPENED We STOPPED THE BEAST and I tell Keith to hurry bring me the other 14 but he is tangled up in the line and looks like the running man in mud ."Again I bark out orders in battle "Keith this fish is charging for god's sake he will tiurn and we need to be tied up by then" .I scramble to bring in line by hand and i feel the MONSTER SWIMMING TOWARDS US -i guess I put a hurting on his ass he's charging with a toothache and two crazed fishermen tugging on hiim.Keith finaly is able to bring over the reel and i do a quick blood knot for a moment I have to let go of the the line attached to the beast as I tie the knot Fast hands and too many orders for Keith I start cranking the second 14/0 but it too late the slack I gave him has dislodged the 14/0 Mustad hook from the big ole hole I must of made in his maw when we had to stop him.Keith was devasteted and I infuriated that I had brought a reel that I was serviced in god knows how many years to hunt THE MONSTERS .
No bulls ,no tippers ,no nurses,no lemons I don't give a damn, we hooked what we came for( ONE FISH ONE VERY SPECIAL) and again the weak link was found and taken advantage of.These monster hammers can only be caught when all conditions are right and tonight was not the night for me ,,,,,,,,,,,HUNTING AGAIN RIGHT NOW I LEAVE FOR THE FOURTH STRAIGHT NIGHT-NEVER GIVE UP!!!

Will..........Sorry to hear you lost another monster in a matter of a few weeks...........but it will be something you will remember for the rest of your days.
Apparently it's time for an upgrade since a reel like that can't handle today's type of monsters. Since 70's, with the introduction of the circle hooks, many fish got a better life span. 40 years latter there are some fully grown monster sharks out there.
Tim got tested on his Penn 130 international when a monster took off a mile of line, now William. Overall seams like that even veteran shark fishermen get into meeting they match at one point - this is WHY people go back fishing over and over again!
